Wishing you all a WILD St. Patrick’s Day

Happy St. Patrick's Day

St. Patrick’s Day is, naturally, a special day here in Ireland… and is celebrated by Irish people and people of Irish descent all over the world. And while St. Patrick is perhaps best known for reducing Ireland’s biodiversity (thanks to him we have no snakes in Ireland, after all), let’s not forget that St. Patrick’s Day marks a pivotal time in the Irish wildlife calendar.

Winter is losing its battle to keep hold of the Irish countryside, and signs of resurgent life are everywhere as spring moves into the ascendancy. Birds are singing; spring migrants like sand martins, wheatears and swallows start to return; bees emerge and descend on early wildflowers, plundering their precious nectar and pollinating them in turn. In the fields Irish hares chase each other in their mad March dance.

So amidst the parades and tidal wave of green, let’s take a moment to appreciate and celebrate the wild world this St. Patrick’s Day.

Here’s hoping you have a wild one!
