Birdwatch Ireland’s Cape Clear Bird Observatory celebrates its 60th birthday this year, and to mark the occasion the island is hosting a nearly two-week-long wildlife festival from Monday 02 September to Saturday 14 September.
Well known British “celebrity birder” David Lindo, The Urban Birder, swaps his familiar cityscapes for the wide-open vistas of Ireland’s most southerly inhabited offshore Island as he kicks off proceedings at 8:30pm on Monday 02 September, then follows up with a talk on Urban Birding from 9pm.
The remainder of the programme includes an eclectic mix of guided wildlife outings, demonstrations and events during the day followed by nightly talks covering everything from the early days of the Cape Clear Bird Observatory to Saving the Cahow Petrel to The Whales in West Cork.
The festival culminates with a Bird Race running from midnight on Friday to 6:30pm on Saturday 14 September, where teams compete to see as many bird species as possible. The race winners will be announced at 9pm, when the festival will be officially closed.
It’s a programme that offers something for everyone, and all events are free. All events are free and everyone is welcome. We hope you will be able to join us and see all that this beautiful island has to offer. For full details check out the festival listing here on the Birdwatch Ireland website.
