National Heritage Week begins this Saturday the 18 August with more than 1,500 events planned around the country spanning every aspect of Irish heritage including wildlife and nature. Don’t forget to check out the programme of events on the Heritage Week website or download the Heritage Week App for your Android or iOS smartphone for details of events taking place near you.
Most Heritage Week events are completely free of charge, and the Heritage Council, who coordinate the programme, anticipate that over 600,000 people will attend events — which is huge.
“2012 is shaping up to be the biggest National Heritage Week to date with over 1500 events registered to take place nationwide,” said Isabell Smyth, Communications Manager with the Heritage Council. “This year will be particularly unique in that a number of built heritage properties will open their doors to the public for the first time. Ireland’s built heritage supports over 35,000 jobs and contributes in the order of €1.5 billion to the national economy.”
